Henley Royal Regatta 2009
This year saw many past and present OULRC oarsmen competing at Henley Royal Regatta.
The OULRC Coxless Four of Bradley Hull, Simon Janes, Thomas Harvey and Bodo Schulenburg raced in the Visitors' Challenge Cup (as Nephthys B.C.). On Thursday, despite a good row, their Army R.C. opposition, weighing in almost 3st heavier per man, proved too tough to beat and the OULRC crew eventually lost by 3 1/2 lengths.
Also racing at the regatta were several old members of OULRC:
- Chris Cole & Henry Sheldon raced with Christ Church in the Ladies', losing on Friday by 2 lengths to the eventual winners of the competition, Leander.
- Andy McGrath, Will Canestaro, Nikola Casule & Zhan Su raced with Balliol & Exeter in the Temple, beating Loughborough University by a length on the Wednesday, but losing to a strong Harvard Crew on the Thursday.
- Alex Woods raced with London R.C. in the Visitors', successfully making it through to the Saturday, where they lost to eventual winners Imperial College & Kingston R.C.
- Joe O'Neill (Nephthys 2004) raced in the Lea RC Wyfold four, and was knocked out on Saturday after hitting the booms while leading London RC by a length and a half.
The Saturday also saw the annual OULRC Henley Picnic in Butcher's field. Once again this proved an extremely successful event, with many old members returning to enjoy food and drink in the sunshine. Many thanks to James Gillies & Ed Biden for organising this event.
